What If You Could
Deepen The Impact You Have With Clients
Without Learning New Techniques?
Dr. Milton Erickson showed us hypnotic inductions are not necessary...

Beyond working conversationally...
Beyond anything to do with scripts...
Beyond protocols and processes and eliciting hypnotic phenomena...
Beyond anything to remember or practice...

What if "go there first" meant having insights that changed everything for you?
Because everyone has their own unique model of the world...
Top trainers of NLP and hypnosis have left the field to share something deeper
and even more fundamental to the human experience. Discover what this is and you can integrate it with any way of helping people that make sense to you, including NLP and hypnosis.
Jamie Smart, Chantal Burns, and Michael Neill are three examples reflected in just this one picture from a UK bookstore in September 2015. All three are former top NLP trainers with books in the 10 best sellers that month.
What if all your clients had to realize only one thing?
(Everyone has all the resources they need already inside them.)
This presupposition of NLP and hypnosis is treated as true because it is useful to do so. It is entirely different working from the understanding this is true for everyone. Our job is to help clients discover it for themselves.

Those best selling books all point to the idea people are not broken and don't need to be fixed. That's not new or controversial to hypnotists or NLP'ers.
What's different is the irrelevance of triggers, initial sensitizing events, traumatic memories, challenging present circumstances, upcoming events, physical condition, family patterns, and anything other than our current level of understanding and awareness, which can change from moment to moment.
What if everybody repeatedly forgot and remembered what they've discovered?
(There is no failure, only feedback.)
We've all heard a joke we didn't get at first, then let out a delayed laugh when we realized what's funny. Same thing can happen when we catch ourselves taking life too seriously.

This is often noticeable in our self-talk, which is a form taken by Thought. "Chronic Seriosity" pervades the stories we tell ourselves:
  • About who we are
  • About what we've experienced
  • About what we are trying to do with our lives
  • About why we are the way we are
  • About why circumstances are the way they are
Being serious is not inherently bad nor necessarily a problem. However, we have all told ourselves stories that are not true, which are like jokes we didn't get. Thoughts are inevitable, believing them is optional.
This meme is my version of "Don't believe everything you think."

That is a common phrase, yet we all get tricked this way at times. It is not a problem. It is at the core of being human, showing us sometimes we see how things really are and sometimes we don't, like a mental map with deletions, distortions, and generalizations.

The better the map, the easier the navigation of life. Map updates are constantly happening. Some are tiny, like sensing whether the temperature calls for a sweater. Others are game changers for life.
What if our understanding of mental health experienced a paradigm change
on the order of the discovery of germs?
- It Is Called Subtractive Psychology -
(Aka The Inside-Out Understanding)
This "new paradigm" is traced back to Sydney Banks, who first articulated the three principles of Consciousness, Mind and Thought in the early 1970's, just as Richard Bandler and John Grinder were beginning to develop NLP. The two fields are not related, though part of my aim here is to make this inside-out understanding relatable to hypnotists and NLP'ers.

The book store photo above captures what Jamie Smart called "a watershed moment" of these principles reaching the mainstream and ending the "first phase" of this paradigm change.

The longer term, bigger picture suggests subtractive psychology can eliminate psychological suffering. It is the first unifying explanation in a soft science field littered with conflicting ideologies, discarded theories, and outdated treatments that have only contributed to our current epidemics of stress, depression, and anxiety.

Dr. Bill Pettit has been sharing this understanding in his psychiatric practice for over 35 years, including three years as a US Navy Flight Surgeon and three years as Chief of Psychiatry of the US Navy Nuclear Submarine base at Groton, Connecticut. Dr. Pettit maintains there is only one cause and one cure for mental illness.
Hypnotists work on the premise the body can't tell the difference between
what is real and what is vividly imagined. We can see this in fMRI scans...
Another way of saying this same common statement about hypnosis is 100% of our experience is generated by the principle of Thought taking form in the moment. The cause and cure of mental illness is found in realizing this or not realizing it, insightfully, in an embodied way like how you know your name or maintain balance when walking.

That's the type of learning and knowing that fosters transformations, from the inside-out. All the personal growth and development in our entire life stems from insight, or emerging awareness of a pre-existing truth. Some examples:
  • We all feel our thinking in this moment; we never directly feel the past, future, or external circumstances
  • We all go back and forth between seeing and not seeing how our thoughts create our feelings
  • When we understand this thought/feeling relationship, and let it be, the mind settles and the body relaxes
  • The mind's self-correcting capacity is innate - it is our "mental immune system"
  • Other innate resources include resilience, curiosity, clarity, peace of mind, confidence, love, freedom, spontaneity, creativity, playfulness, laughter, and the capacity to learn and grow
These particular examples are just part of what's there to be seen in each of us. The inside-out understanding reached a watershed moment in 2015 because a critical mass has been sharing "what they see."

Such sharing is necessarily a unique expression for each of us, even as we point to the same principles. If I were to repeat everything I learned from Jamie Smart, I would not be effective. That would metaphorically be as if I focused on his finger, rather than the moon he's pointing to.
You can learn from me because my embodied understanding of these principles is showing me how to share with you what I see. If you are willing to look in the direction I'm pointing, we'll explore through playfulness and intentional laughter.
The implications of what you will realize through your own insights will effortlessly show up in your work and the rest of your life as you inevitably share what you see. Your understanding will reveal wisdom that guides you without needing techniques.

That does not mean giving up NLP or hypnosis. Your training is part of you and your wisdom will call upon you to use it when it makes sense. It will come from
your embodied understanding rather than following a process or protocol.

Great ideas may show up in the shower, on a hike, watching the ocean, or when doing nothing at all. Yet we don't rely on any of these as techniques for having great ideas.
No one activity or environment always reveals what you seek because
answers always come from within.

Knowing you have all the resources you need already inside you means trusting you get what you need, when you need it. That goes for you and your clients. It also means
you already are what you seek, so you can relax and stop looking outside.

There are countless ways you can discover this for yourself. The fun way is through playfulness and unconditional laughter.
  • Laughter is the sound of joyful breathing
  • Laughter is hypnotic - the body can't distinguish laughing on purpose from laughing at something funny
  • Laughter stimulates "happy hormones," including dopamine, which supports learning and memory
  • Laughter is innate - babies everywhere laugh before they can speak or understand humor
  • Laughter from the inside-out reveals unconditional access to other innate resources noted above
I got onto The Playful Path because I was already traveling the world teaching Laughnosis, the course I created with James Hazlerig exploring the parallels between hypnosis and laughing on purpose.
My travels took me to Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, where I lived for nearly two years, routinely laughing and playing spontaneously with the strangers I randomly encountered on the streets and at organized laughter sessions.

Some of those experiences were documented in my Urban Adventures in Playfulness, while most were part of the nearly 3.5 years of daily laughter demonstration videos I produced.
When you delve this deeply into anything you are bound to discover extraordinary gifts. What I found is that while hypnosis and laughter have many parallels, subtractive psychology and unconditional laughter have many points of intersection and weave together like the double helix shape of DNA.
Using playfulness and unconditional laughter to share the inside-out understanding occurred to me as I realized the dreams of my laughter teacher, Dr. Madan Kataria, and my coaching teacher, Jame Smart, lead to the same place - a peaceful world, without psychological suffering, and awareness mental wellbeing is innate.

Being impacted by the principles behind both laughter and subtractive psychology has been transformational for both my clients and me, personally and professionally. Now you too can journey with me on
The Playful Path and discover what you already know how to do can be more fun and impactful than ever!

Dave Berman is best known for producing laughter demonstration videos every day for nearly 3.5 years. He is an internationally recognized laughter expert, coach, consultant, author, and public speaker. Fellow hypnotist Kelley T. Woods discovered Dave when he presented about laughter in hypnotherapy at HypnoThoughts Live 2014 in Las Vegas. Dave and Kelley then co-wrote the book Laughter for the Health of It

Dave has traveled extensively in the US and abroad sharing the impact of having a daily laughter practice and teaching Laughnosis, the unique blend of intentional laughter and hypnosis he developed with James Hazlerig. Dave also created a public speaking program using laughter to help non-native English speakers advance their careers in Thailand and Vietnam.
He is currently teaching workshops around North America called The Playful Path to Less Stress and More Love. These events incorporate stories from Dave’s Urban Adventures In Playfulness on the streets of Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, where he lived for nearly two years before recently returning to the US. The program also reflects his latest insights about laughing from the inside-out as a vehicle for self-discovery and exploration of the mental health paradigm called subtractive psychology

Access to this work is also available in the subscriber community Think Less, Laugh More, The Playful Path Introduction program for hypnotists, and in Dave’s application-only coaching program, Play as BIG as You Dream!

Dave has laughed with people in all 50 United States and 69 other countries (so far!).
